The village of Gates Mills was founded in 1826 by Holsey Gates, who purchased 130 acres of land in the Chagrin Valley as the river provided an excellent water supply to start a sawmill. The great location led to the construction of additional mills, and the area became known as Gates Mills. By the mid-1800s, Gates Mills was a flourishing Greater Cleveland community with a school, tavern, mail service, and several thriving manufacturing plants. In 1930 the village grew to include police and fire departments, and eventually, the mills closed.
Today, Gates Mills remains a quaint, serene Northeast Ohio village with a population of approximately 2,235 residents.
